Description
In 1897 and 1898, the forces promoting independence issued pesos. In 1915, cupro-nickel coins of 1, 2, and 5 centavos, silver coins of 10, 20 and 40 centavos and 1 peso, and gold coins of 1, 2, 4, 5, 10 and 20 pesos were introduced. The coins were struck at the United States Mint in Philadelphia. The gold and 2 centavo coins were not produced after 1916, and the large star design 1 peso ceased production in 1934. A new silver peso was issued showing a woman, representing the Republic of Cuba, below one star (The “ABC Peso”) from 1934 to 1939. Finally, in 1953 there was a centenary of the José Martí commemorative peso (also minted in denominations of 50, 25, and 1 centavos).
